The Archbishop took our service of thanksgiving.

I could not understand this sentence. [particularly, the "service of thanksgiving"]

I looked up the word "thanksgiving" in a dictionary but still I could not make out this sentence.

Please help me.

Now, I can understand this sentence, "We want to give thanks to *** and since we can't give it by ourself, we approached Archbishop as they can speak to ***, so the Archbishop said our thanks to *** on our behalf".

I know I may be wrong, but that's what I understand.
