Service identity

It's a post-apocalyptic story. The most of mankind was wiped out by monsters and cataclysms. The line is said (written in his diary in fact) by a former captain who served for the Coalition (a supranational global alliance) and now lives together with other soldiers at sea.

The captain: The Coalition is officially dead, but somehow our service identities are as strong as ever. Such is the bond of brothers - and sisters - in arms.

Thank you!
Though tell me whether I am right or not please. I'm not completely sure. It means that every soldier has retained their "service identity" and remember where they belong to, so in fact, each of the soldiers are still carrying out his/her duties.

I haven't read the story, but that's the general idea, yes.
