I understand it to mean that he served others (in the sense of helping others), or served a cause (i.e. promoted and furthered a cause).

There's some religion which uses the expressions "service to others" and "service to self."
Perhaps that applies.

You're right Mr Wordy. That guy was helping other people, not only his family, but he was also a flight attendant, so he used to help people on the plane. So that's why the author used the word "server" because he was serving, he was a kond of servant in this lifetime.

As for the "guiding others" part I'm not sure myself.
