Serious in appearance

Question

I'm puzzled by the underlined sentence of the following paragraph written by a kid.  I don't know what idea he wants to express.   However, I tried to rephrase the following sentences to complete the paragraph.There is no place looks warm of my mother, besides her heart.  My mother is a warmhearted, generous lady although she sometimes may look cool without smiles in her appearance, and she talks seriously.  Nevertheless, she is very concerned about us and takes good care of us.  We know her heart is full of love.

I guess the kid wants to say that his mother's heart is his haven of calm and love and no other place is comparable with her heart. However, I feel this image is a little complicated to be drawn by the mind of a child.
