Series vs serial

Hi.

How is series different from serials when we are talking about television or radio programs.

Ex. Television series/Serial (I have seen both terms used)

So my understanding is that prison break, Lost and heroes are serials, and big bang theory, friends are series.

But if you google the combination, you can see there 20million findings for prison break series and only 5million for prison break serial.

Hi,

Your Google figures probably reflect the fact that, in my experience, the word 'serial' is becoming uncommon and old-fashioned.

You might also consider that it is very common simply to speak of eg Prison Break as 'a TV show'.
