Series of questions in a statement

I'm having a huge problem figuring out how to edit sentences that start out as a statement but then end with a question or questions. Please help!!!

For instance:

--The question is: What compliments green?, or, in other words, What color is across from green on the color wheel?

Do I put single or double quotation marks around the questions, and how should "or in other words" be puncuated?

--The first of these issues, examined in chapter 1, involves answering the questions: What is microbiology? and How can we use it?

How should this be punctuated?

--Other questions will also be answered, such as: What is split complimentary? How can we use it? What is the best way to choose paint colors?

Quotation marks, no quotations, commas?

Sorry, I always have to know the reasons behind things. Why do I put quotes around the first sentence and not the others? And, when do you use single quotes? Around words when being sarcastic, or is it still double quotes?
