Serial comma and etc

Apples, oranges etc are needed for the recipe.

Questions

(1) In the sentence above, can I leave out the comma before 'etc'?
I don't prefer the series comma, and if I included it, I would be essentially writing 'Apples, oranges, and so forth are needed for the recipe.'

(2) Can I write 'etc' without the full stop midsentence?

(3) Is this written okay with just one comma?
'Apples, oranges and so forth are needed for the recipe.'
