Serial comma

Is the serial comma 'a must'? Some writers use it; some don't. What's your opinion?

Of course it's not a must. The very fact that some use it and some don't tells you that it's a matter of writing style, not of grammar. I swear by it.

I swear by it. I always use it. The past two places I've worked had it as part of the house style.

I take it you mean eg I bought bread, milk, and jam.

I never even heard of the idea of using such a comma until I started posting on this Forum.
