"Sergio Vieira de Mello" tempts not so cunning linguists at the BBC

The murder of the UN's man in Iraq has brought out the suckers for exoticism amongst announcers and correspondents at the Beeb.

There is not the slightest justification to attempt to ape the Portuguese pronunication in news broadcasts in English: something like 'serge-ee-oh vee-air-uh duh mellow' is more than perfectly adequate: it would be - correct!
But the 'gifted amateurs' 'know' that a final 'o' in Portuguese is pronounced 'oo'; and have an idea that a 'll' has the same pronunciation as in French. And allow a slight pause after saying the name for preening - *so* cosmopolitan, these White City types!

Meanwhile, of course, when it comes to drama, the BBC can find no one beneath the age of 70 who is able to give a decent RP where the part demands it (as it so often does - they love a good costume drama!). Even the Brightest Young Thing or Piccadilly Johnny is let down by a telltale weak and flabby final 'l' - the stubbornest element of Estuary English to eradicate.
Too much to expect the domestic BBC to start speaking English appropriately before dabbling in foreign tongues? You bet your sweet bippy!
