Sequence of tenses in this phrase

I'm listening to the Marshall Mathers LP 2 and there is a phrase people report as "I used to be the type of kid that would always think the sky is falling"... my doubt is: shouldn't it be "I used to be the type of kid that would always think the sky was falling"?
