Sequence of tenses

Hello everyone. I have a question.

Regarding the following two sentences in a row:

It took me some time to figure out what that word was. It is derived from French, isn't it?

I'm not sure about what tense we should use in the second sentence. Does the sentence "It was derived from French, wasn't it?" sound more natural in a case like this?
