sequence of tenses

Hi I would like to know if the following sentence is correct-'Every time I was told that I’m an important player'. Well I took it from an English newspaper so there should be no mistake but as far as I know tenses cannot be mixed and in reported speeches there should be some sort of tense sequence.

Top answer

" A: They told me that I was an important player. B. They told me that I am an important player.

  • " A: They told me that I was an important player.
  • B.
  • They told me that I am an important player.
  • A is always correct as the reported version of the original.
  • B is possible if the person uttering it is still an important player.
