sequence of life

How would you say 'the sequence of life'?
The normal sequence of life is that parents pass away before their children. When it's the other way around it must really be hard on the parents.

There's nothing wrong with what you have here. You could also say something like "the pattern of life expectancy is that children outlive their parents...."
