Sentences of unreal conditions

1. _no friction between the surface of the road and our feet, we could not walk at all.
A If there was B Were there C Was there D There was
I think this is a sentence of unreal conditions and it should be "If there were or were there no friction...."
But the answer says A! Why?
2. She would go and inform him if she __ his address.
A know B had know C knew D would have known
Apparently, this girl didn't know the man's address. Wouldn't it be "if she knew his address, she would go and inform him"?
The answer gives D.

C would be my choice. I don't see D as the best answe
