Sentences in setting up the scene

Hi. Please help me with these.

How could I refer to an event or action that occurred in the past when present tenses were used to depict (describe) a scene? It seems to me that it would be awkward, if not incorrect, to restart/continue with a present tense. Help.

He is walking fast to his home about ten minutes away. After a few minutes, he realizes he is without his watch. He left it at school.

Also, please help me with this. Is the underlined part correct?

He sees an old man holding a cup talking to someone. Instinctively he realizes that the man is someone he has met in the previous day. He goes up to me and starts the conversation.
