Hi

Is it OK to write when I'm telling a story:

1. A week later I got a phone call from one of the companies I had sent my papers to and.... (do I have to use the past perfect tense?)

2. I was really stressed and nervous because it was (had been) my first interview.

3. I was suprised because I never (had never) worked before.

4. You can call an employer a few days later and ask if they (had) already made a decision.

  • You could use either had sent or sent here as the order of events is clear.

This sentence is OK. You could use either had sent or sent here as the order of events is clear. Papers sent, then phone call received.

Can you just explain to me why "was" in 2nd and not "had been"
