Hi teachers,

Would you please correct the sentences for me, and explain the mistakes? Thanks.

1. Mary called me about a friend's passing away / death, who was very nice to me when were in college.

2. He was a father to / of a 2-year-old, whose mother is a teacher.

It's better if the subordinate clause is close to what it describes.

In #2. I don't know how to construct this sentence because John is dead, but "she" isn't. "She" is John's wife. Would the use of "whose" in the sentence give a wrong impression that it actually refers to "John's mother" and not "the 2-year-old'mother"? I don't know how to sa

They are all OK. The apostophe ess versions seem more informal and casual.
