Sentence structure: are or is?

Hi all,

There is a discussion between myself and friends regarding a post that states "Dallas are back!"

I was taught in school that if the subject is singular, it should be 'is'. My friends are saying that because it refers to a team of multiple people, it's considered plural. I'm fairly sure that whether it's speaking toward the state or the team, it's singular.. Thoughts?
