Sentence structure

"For my family, growing up in the west, the love of the outdoors was a religion and the national parks its cathedrals. " I hk no idea what sentence pattern is used in " the National parks its cathedrals". Can anyone explain this sentence and give some other examples? Thx a Lottttt for your help!!!!
