That is better (in my opinion.)

The first sentence is better with different verbs:
Ask children to observe / notice how they are different from one another.

Both sentences are correct and sound natural. One is not preferable to the other. The first one sounds like the most way to express the thought without considering how to say it first. The second was might have been thought about more before it was said. Evaluating them, I would say they are equally good.
