Sentence stress question?

if you have to work on it If I stressed WORK and IT, would that make it different from stressing only IT or WORK? Would that convey another meaning to the listener?
And do you always follow the stressing rules, stressing content words only?

It's rare to stress "it". I don't think I ever do. Stressing "it" is a way of emphasizing whatever "it" refers to. Other than a difference in emphasis, the meaning is the same as when you don't stress "it".
