Sentence revision

I want to know how the sentence below looks to the natives in terms of its overall structure and grammatical validity.

"Although the International Atomic Energy Agency's demand for nuclear inspection of North Korea is being backed up by the UN security council, North Korea is refusing the demand, firing back with more blatant and incendiary remarks."

Does the underlined clause read well or awkwardly?

Thanks.

Thanks for the revision.

I have one question.

Is OK not to put an object after "refuse"?

And would you tell me when it's OK to omit objects in general?

'Refuse' is both transitive and intransitive, so in this case it needs no object. Intransitive verbs need no object.
