Are both forms of these sentences correct? If so, are the ones with 'were' and 'improved' considered back shifting?
Results showed that subjects are diabetic.

Results indicated that apples improve diabetes.
Results indicated that apples improved diabetes.
Specific question: Are the two forms of sentences related to this topic of back shifting or not? If not, are they a matter of real time or viewpoint, and thus this issue of back shifting does not apply to them? I think that they are not related to backshifting and more about real time/viewpoint but I am not sure!

That is probably too simplistic, but that's how I read them. I'll let CJ fill in the gaps.

I personally think that it is not a matter of simple back shifting as you said. I think they are more about real time (view point) vs a general truth statement.
