Sentence questions

Hello, 

I am not sure whether the three sentences make sense in term of grammar and semantics. 

Can you give me a hand with checking them

1. The role of forests in our planet outweighs other resources because they enable people to breathe fresh air and shield the safety of their life and property. 

2. Because of extensive logging of forests, residents in mountainous areas fear that a typhoon, which brings heavy rainwater, will contribute to a massive landslide, covering houses with a great amount of soil, devastating people’s homelands, and killing lots of people. 

3. Only when trees are thriving on the earth, do they function to protect people's from disasters.
