"After that I thought nobody can kill us now -- when we met the enemy I wasn't scared."

"I thought nobody could kill us then." But it loses all its punch.

You might want to use direct speech:

After that I thought [to myself], "Nobody can kill us now!" And when we met the enemy, I wasn't scared.
