sentence problems

The idea have been haunted ever since it came acrossed my mind. What was the experience like if you went into this country and just be like them for a year. I felt very excited when I made up mind to try it. I do not understand much about them when I watch documentaries on tv or read books.

PS: I cast the first sentence in past perfect because now that you have 'made up your mind' you should no longer be 'haunted' by the idea.
