Are both 'have started' and just 'started' possible in this sentence?

I was wondering if you started working on your project.

I was wondering if you have started working on your project.

I am assuming that my examples with the simple past (started) and present perfect (have started) don’t have much of a difference in meaning in this sentence, except that maybe the the present perfect focuses on the present, But I think that the the use of the simple past also implies t
