Sentence pattern Adverbial or complement -confuse

The teacher has given us some work
in this sentence
The teacher =Subject
given=verb
us=inderect object
work=direct object
this pattern is S V IO DO.
There must be a direct object
Therefore, there must be an action verb
The indirect object will always come BEFORE the d.o
The i.o. is ALWAYS a noun

If compement comes like S V DO C
how to identify
how these keywords will help to identify complement
