Sentence Parsing

Hi,
Please could you help me with this? I need to parse the following sentence: He looks at the price, takes it to the checkout and purchases the said item. I am fine with everything except 'said'. Is it being used as an adjective in this context?
Thanks.

Yes, it's an adjective. It is telling you that the item was mentioned earlier, and we are now talking about the same item. I don't think a native English speaker would use it.

You could substitute "aforementioned," whose meaning would be more obvious, but would sound equally legalistic.

You don't really need an adjective here: ". . . . takes it to the checkout and purchases the item. works fully as well.
