Sentence meaning

Hello, I encountered a sentence and having trouble understanding it. I'd be very glad if someone can explain.


He was an early supporter of the new party and helped to recruit others to its cause

Can anyone explain this highlighted part. Especially I didn't understand the usage of cause here. Thanks a lot.
