sentence meaning

Can anyone help me understand the use of the word 'exception' in this sentence?

" A writer I know was bullied quite badly by anonymous "guest" reviews that took exception to her rendition of him."

I am guessing it means that guest reviewers left a lot of criticism for the writer's version of a character?
