Sentence meaning

Hi,

I'm not understanding the conclusion of the sentence:

Launched into a long harangue about poor customer service without realizing that I wasn't even an employee!

Don't we all do that sometimes when we are not employees? So why say "wasn't even an employee"?

Thanks!
