You might like to look at the word 'vocation'.

I realize my post is overblown and that "vocation" and "calling" share the same root.

Somehow I think we use "calling" to suggest something beyond our chosen field.

What's your vocation? What's your line of work?
We don't usually ask, "What's your calling?" - unless we're being cute.
