Hello,

When I was alive , I lived in a palace where sorrow was not allowed to enter. My courtiers called me The Happy Prince. So I lived , and so I died.

Why "the" has been used before "Happy Prince"?

What is meaning of the sentence written in bold words?

Thanks.

Hi,

"This love has taken its toll on me "

'Toll' has a couple of different but related meanings.

1. You 'pay a toll' to use a highway, meaning a price. We call it a 'toll road'.

2. If something 'takes its toll on you', it means it hurts you in some way. It's related to meaning #1, in the sense that something makes you 'pay a price'.

"The" has been used before "Happy Prince" to show that among all princes we are particularly speaking about the prince who is happy (i.e; HAPPY PRINCE).

"So" means "in this way" in this sentence(in bold).
Thereby the meaning is:-
In this way I lived, and in this way I died.
