Sentence inquiry

I heard someone say: you better not argue with me.

Is that sentence correct?

Top answer

It should be: Y ou'd (You had) better not argue with me. However, the version with 'd (had) is so common that it has almost become acceptable.

But the 'you'd' sounds like it is in the past! What about the one I wrote, you better not, which sounds more in the present, is it correct?

So, even though it does not seem correct, that is just how it is said!

Does the same apply to: you better listen to me.

Lastly, are they considered as formal english?

You had better go means something like It would be better if you went.

The so-called past tense is frequently used for unreal situations - the going is hypothetical at the moment of speaking
