Sentence Improvement

Answer as per my book is (c).

As per my understanding it should be (d). Does the option (c) means 'economist(role) and politician(role)'? If yes, please tell me the difference between (c) and (d). Thank you!

It means the same as anywhere in the discussion of language register. The double genitive is less formal than the 'of'-genitive except when it is required to avoid ambiguity.
