Sentence II

My friend thanked to his father and said that he needs to get back to town immediately, he had classes tomorrow. He also asked his father to send his gratitude to uncle in Austria the next time they speak on the phone.

Is the second sentence correct please? I wish someone could help. The meaning is that the guy has asked his father to forward his thanks to uncle who was living in Austria. The father is supposed to say to the guy's uncle about how thankful he was.
