Sentence help please

Hey guys,
I am not sure if this rather weird sentence is grammaticaly correct:

"They all take part in carrot-hood, but none of them, by itself, is the carrot."
The "by itself" part is what sounds funny to me.

" The "by itself" part is what sounds funny to me. I wouldn't call this sentence incorrect, and I wouldn't say the phrase 'by itself' is incorrect. However, I think the meaning would be unchanged and the sentence would be simpler if 'by itself' were simply omitted.
