Are both of these correct?

It was a while ago since I saw him.
It has been a while ago since I saw him.

Are both 'was' and 'has been' possible?

Thanks, CJ. So the simple past 'was' is not possible when used with 'since' and thus, present perfect is required. Would that be right in all cases, generally, with 'since'?
