Sentence help

Can I say:
What were you thinking about me today.

My girl friend told me she was thinking about me, and I want to know what was she thinking about. Is the above sentence correct?

It's possible. The word 'what' will be stressed, and there will be a very slight pause after it.

I would like to convey that message. Is that sentence correct? Is there a better way of saying it?

If your friend has just told you that she was thinking about you today, then "What were you thinking about me today" is possible. "What precisely were you thinking of about me today?" is also possible.

Note that I said 'possible'; "What were you thinking?" is probably more natural.

The problem with all of these is that they are moderately unnatural. If you 'think about' someone, it generally means that you have a picture of them in your minds. You are not putting conscious thoughts together.
