Sentence Guidance

Hi Experts:-

I have following three sentences ,I need to verify them in terms of grammar and constructions:-

1)JOHN's unexpected return from Europe to his native town Boston causes his former colleges mates to reconsider their own life choices

Is causes a right word or can any other word be used to enhance the impact?

2)Sammy aspires to win  singing contest but gets sidetracked due to his obsession to make a music video.

Is this sentence correct ?

3)Sammy comes into his own with the encouragement of his teacher

is "comes into his own" used correctly here?I want to convey the impression of individual overcoming their problems.

Looking forward for guidance from experts,I am extremely sorry if we need to open separate links for different questions, please let me know so that I can do it.

Top answer

1)John's unexpected return from Europe to his native town of Boston (or just native Boston) made his colleagues reconsider their own life choices. (it's still not clear why his coming home made his colleagues reconsider their own life choices. ) 2)Sammy aspires to win a singing contest but gets sidetracked due to his obsession to make a music video.

  • 1)John's unexpected return from Europe to his native town of Boston (or just native Boston) made his colleagues reconsider their own life choices.
  • (it's still not clear why his coming home made his colleagues reconsider their own life choices.
  • ) 2)Sammy aspires to win a singing contest but gets sidetracked due to his obsession to make a music video.
  • (again, the second part of the sentence seems somewhat uncorrelated with the first) 3)Sammy came into his own after the encouragement from his teacher.
  • My choice of tenses perhaps changes the meanings you intended but all of your sentences can be written in either present or past tense (I opted for one or the other)

Hi,

thanks for your reply,,,actually its part of a short story,i am checking sentences for grammar.

Everything has to written in present tense,

I am sticking with "comes into her own" in 3rd sentence while going with "makes" in fst in place of "causes"

Thanks for your guidance.

This is more emphatic:

John's unexpected return from Europe to his native town Boston forces his former colleges mates to reconsider their own life choices.
