Sentence grammar

I have been doing a little research and having a talk with the knowledgeable David on the subject, both sources saying I need to not only consume more protein than usual but also have a daily calorie surplus through eating all food types, not just protein.

Is it clear what sources refers to?

Should it be "I need not only to consume..."

Thanks

"Research" is vague. It is not clear what the "second" source is. If it helps, here is how I would rephrase your sentence.
