Sentence errors

I not sure about the grammatical problems of the following sentences: -



1. It was in September that I first noticed it. (cleft sentence)

2. Please ask the students whom you think know the answer to the question.



Would anybody help? Thanks a lot!

1-- Not an error exactly-- but the two ' it' s are confusing because they have different referents. 2-- ' Whom ', as the subject of ' know ', is wrong.

I not sure about the grammatical problems of the following sentences: -

2. Please ask the students whom you think know the answer to the question.

Please ask the students who (you think) know the answer to the question.

If you removed 'you think', it would be clear why 'who' should be used.
