does it mean that 'to leave' is transitive in this sentence? Does it sound correct to say: 'the room was left (by Mary)?'

Only transitive verbs take objects. The room was left by Mary sounds awkward to me but is of course grammatically correct. Not all correct sentences are actually used. English is a language of fixed phrases and sometimes the slightest deviation from what is normally said may sound unnatural.
