Sentence difference?

Nobody told me he was coming.

Nobody told me he is coming.

Senario:

John had just found out his rival from high school is/was also coming along on the ski trip.

John: "Nobody told me he was coming." Or

John: "Nobody told me he is coming."

Why is it was or is? It sounds to me either one is fine for all three sentences.

Nobody told me he was coming means he's already here or should be here any minute.
