Sentence diagramming

I am teaching grammar to my daughter gr 5. The curriculum we use emphasises sentence diagramming. How important is this really? is at absolutely essential to be able to take every word apart in a sentence? my daughter feels bogged down learning all the names of each part of a sentence? We are looking towards doing either SAT's or Cambridge. I think I just need to understand what she really needs know to get a good English education...

I found the study of diagramming was very helpful when I was in the fifth grade, but I had a great teacher. I actually found it enjoyable, but others in my class hated it. Some students find the visual representation helpful while others find it to be a waste of time.
