Sentence correctness

Hi

I have a question on this sentence.

Having stolen the money, the thief was searched by the police.

My opinion

The construction sounds odd to me: The second part of the sentence is in passive voice.

If it were in active voice it would sound better—for example, "...the thief rushed to take the 5 'O clock train".

Please give your comments.

the thief rushed to take the 5 'O clock train". I agree that the active is better; nevertheless, the original sentence with the passive is not grammatically wrong. What bothers me more about the original is that it doesn't portray an authentic scenario.

  • the thief rushed to take the 5 'O clock train".
  • I agree that the active is better; nevertheless, the original sentence with the passive is not grammatically wrong.
  • What bothers me more about the original is that it doesn't portray an authentic scenario.
  • It sounds as if the police already knew that he had stolen the money, and they searched the thief because they knew that.
  • In the real situation police search a person (who would not yet be called a thief) because they suspect that he has stolen the money (and is therefore a thief).
