sentence correctness 09/06

Dear teachers,

Would you please tell me if the following sentences are correctly written ? (grammar, style, punctuation)

1. The index of body mass makes it possible to evaluate the fat content of a person to determine her stoutness. (why "her"?)

2. Blood represents a liquid which is used to diffuse oxygen necessary to the vital processes among all fabrics of the body.

3. Finland is a country of northern Europe, member of the European Union and euro zone.

4. The muscles are the contractile shape of fabrics of the animal.

5. Our city has an international circuit of motor races.

6. The poem of Cid exalts virtues of courage.

7. The myth of Atlantis occurs in the dialogues of Plato.

8. An iceberg is a block of fresh water ice deriving on the sea.

9. The division of the knowledge and the choice of a collective work support the penetration of the eastern culture in western Europe.

Here's what I would say.

1. The body mass index makes it possible to evaluate the fat content of a person.




2. Blood is a liquid which is used to diffuse oxygen, necessary for the vital processes, to all parts of the body.

Clive's correction is fine, but just a point about the verb "derive". If you mean that its origin is the sea you could say "derived from the sea". However, I suspect another interpretation, considering the meaning of "deriva" in Italian (and maybe s
