Sentence correction regarding parts of speech

Is this correct?

I couldn't take a firm decision between the dog and the cat.

Or should it be:

I couldn't take a firm decision between the animals.

i.e. Can i mention the choices after using the word "between" or should i just mention the general fact such as 'the animals' in the second sentence?
