Sentence correction

Hello,

Can you please tell me if these two sentences are grammatically correct; I'm mostly concerned about the use of tenses in the underlined parts. Shouldn't I use Present Perfect there? In this assignment I am to describe the personality of an only child. Thank you.

Only children have always been treated as the most important people by their adults and did not have to share their parents' attention with anyone.

An only child is often perceived as lazy since it was adults that have always done everything and they did not have to worry about doing any chores.
